AEDIFICEM (2018)

Furniture design inspired by the meeting and interaction of artists in the city

The art piece titled ‘Aedificem’ relates to the act of constructing. Constructing narratives, opportunities, dreams and nightmares. Art is the means through which experiential alternatives to our reality may be explored. The art piece allows users to sit and engage in a number of domestic and creative activities but has flexibility and interaction at the heart of its design. The speculative table design was prepared as an experimental piece of furniture design. The decorative rig above the table creates the opportunity for a host of creative opportunities. From puppetry to cinematic projection, this allows the table space to be used in a variety of configurations.

The height axis of tables, often limits objects to the table surface, however by allowing objects to be suspended, the full volume of space above the table may use and manipulated by the artists. As opposed to designing artistic visual interest in a static and derivative manner, the theatre of artist’s activity and interaction becomes an ever-changing display and use. The structure therefore becomes a trellis for creative growth in all of its organic and unexpected character.
